Winter Buyer's Guide for Cruisers

SailingGear.Com owner Mike Glover and wife Carol cruise in the Virgin Islands and Bahamas aboard their Lagoon 380 Lucy. Mike also does the passages to deliver Lucy to destinations along the east coast and Caribbean. Mike and Carol put together this Buyer's Guide to help you make wise buying decisions for your winter gear. There are 2 categories: Bahamas/Carribean AND Offshore Delivery

Bahamas and Caribbean
If you are headed for tropical waters this winter, you are going to need several core items to be truly comfortable. While there are certainly many more items that should be in your sea bag, we think that these items are key.  We recommend the following (see pictures below):

1) Beach shoes - Aqua Tech Shoes for beachcombing, riding in dinghies/kayaks and for snorkeling (wear under fins).
2) Rash Guards (long sleeve) - Rash Shirts are essential gear for keeping the sun off your body. They are super comfy and dry very quickly. We swim and snorkel in these.

Coast Light Jacket

3) Glideskin Top (optional) - If you do a lot of swimming and snorkeling, this is a great top for knocking the chill off. It's made from a 3-layer fabric that includes a thin layer of neoprene making it warm and comfortable in the water (and out).
4) Light Foul Weather Gear - for wet weather and cool (or wet) evenings, we recommend either the Coast Light or Coast Sport jacket and trousers. Both come in women's sizes. We also like the Coast Light Long. The jacket can be worn over your shorts for a wet dinghy ride or sitting on a wet deck. No need for the trousers.
5) Good Sunglasses - Gill's new line of sunglasses feature Polarized® lenses, floating frames and many styles to choose from. And they're so inexpensive that you can buy 2 pair.
6) A Proper Sea Bag - Gill's Tarp Barrel Bag and the smaller Compact Bag have everything you need in a proper sea bag.
7) A Proper Pair of Gloves - Championship Gloves are soft, versatile and priced right.

Offshore Delivery
If you are headed for tropical waters this winter, you might just be in for a long offshore delivery. If you are making this kind of trip, you will need an entirely different range of gear to keep you warm and dry. Layering' is a system for starting at the skin and adding layers as necessary to stay warm and dry. We recommend the following, starting at the skin and working out (see pictures below):

1) Thermal Base Layer - Your first defense for staying warm and dry is the base layer. Gill's base layer top and long johns feature the latest wicking fabrics.
2) Thermal Mid-Layer -  Worn over the base layer these mid-layer garments provide the real warmth in the layering system.

Atlantic Jacket

3) Full Featured Foul Weather Gear - We think that Gill's Key West foul weather gear represents a best buy in this category. It has all of the features that you need and has a great price tag. If you are one for whom 'only the best will do', consider moving up to the Gill Atlantic gear or Gill OC Racer.
4) Good Sunglasses - Gill's new line of sunglasses feature Polarized® lenses, floating frames and a lot of styles to choose from. And they are so inexpensive that you buy 2 pair.
5) A Proper Sea Bag - Gill's Tarp Barrel Bag and the smaller Compact Bag have everything you need in a proper sea bag.
6) A Proper Pair of Gloves - Championship Gloves are soft, versatile and priced right.
7) Proper Sea Boots - Gill's Yachting Boots are warm, dry and priced right.
